The first few days of Parpar

Saturday the 11th
Bought a new betta fish  (at the urging of Flatmate).  She was away for the weekend so I thought it would be a nice surprise for her to come home to a new pet in the flat.
Poor Boyfriend got dragged along with me.  We needed to go grocery shopping, but I put my new fish at the top of the priority list.  It was about a twenty minute walk to the fish store, and Boyfriend had to drag along our two-wheeled shopping trolley for groceries later on.  It's too short for him so it bumps into his legs a lot. As we walked it rained on us three times (Melbourne weather is pretty bi-polar at the best of times).  The weather was all sunny skies as soon as we got through the door of the shop.

After chatting with the shopkeep for a few minutes I spent the rest of the time browsing through the multitude of betta's.  They were mostly red, black, and blue.  I liked the blue ones the best, but this one little betta fish with flashing fins like a blue Morpho butterfly really caught my eye.  He'd swim up to the glass and wriggle every time I walked past.  I decided to get him, along with a new aquarium (apparently they need at least 2-3 gallons to swim around in) and a filter.  Plus lots of pet food and water conditioner.  Boyfriend spent the entire time playing with a lethargic bear-sized black dog, he was also a bit put out that the shopping trolley was used to house a 10 litre aquarium instead of groceries.

Once we got home (after he insisted we get groceries any way), I set up my little betta's tank, put him into the water and am anxiously awaiting to see if he makes it.

Sunday the 12th
I've been trying to think of a name for my little betta fish.  So far I've come up with Hercules, Thor, Archimedes, Charco (Spanish for puddle), and Mr. Fish.  None of them really fit.  He's too cute but too pretty for all of the names.  I'm going to wait for Flatmate to come home to help.
I'm feeling a bit sick today, but I've been researching bettas like crazy (I'm already really attached and don't want him to die).  It turns out betta fish can get easily bored if left in a plain environment.  Also they like places to hide.  Even though I feel unwell I'm going back to the petstore to buy fishy some silk plants for entertainment (apparently plastic plants will tear his delicate fins).

Update: Petstore was closed for St Kilda Festival.  So no plants until Wednesday

Update: Flatmate came home.  She wants to name him Blue, but all of my pets thus far have been named on their colours (Greenie, the budgie & Black Beauty my bordercollie/Westie).

Monday the 13th
We've named the fish!  Since he looks like a Blue Morpho Didius butterfly, we've named him Parpar (which is butterfly in Hebrew).  He seems like a Parpar.  He's been wriggling at me all day and blowing bubbles.  His water is a bit cloudy.  It's something called New Tank Syndrome so I'm going to bring in his water to check the ammonia levels soon.

I've never had a little life 100% dependent on me!  I'm excited.  I'm going to do my best to make sure he lives as long as possible.
